The Café

The best coffee is d’A Brasileira!

The story of A Brasileira do Chiado brings with it many other stories. It has gone through several eras, political systems and turning points in the history of Portugal, always knowing how to maintain its essence and perpetuating the memories of many artists and anonymous faithful who here find a unique space for over a hundred years.

Inaugurated on November 19, 1905, in Chiado, in a space that was once a shirt store, A Brasileira was created by Adriano Telles, a former emigrant Portuguese in Brazil, who married the daughter of one of the largest coffee producers in the Region of Minas Gerais. Returning to Portugal, he started selling the coffee, a drink that was previously unknown and little appreciated for the bitter taste that characterized it. Attentive to the issues that prevented it´s customers from enjoying the coffee of Brazil, he implemented the idea of creating an establishment that would allow tasting the quality of the product and distributing it free of charge.

The interior decoration made d’A Brasileira a space where the illustrious of the time met: lawyers, doctors, teachers, writers, and artists, it also included the revolutionaries who participated in the establishment of the republic in 1910.

With freedom achieved, and the republic formed and for its privileged locations, A Brasileira do Chiado became one of the busiest cafes in Lisbon at the time and was the setting of numerous intellectual, artistic, and literary casual meetings. Renowned writers and artists such as Fernando Pessoa or Almada Negreiros found in A Brasileira do Chiado the inspiration for paradoxical concepts and ideas.

The attendance of Fernando Pessoa motivated the inauguration, in the 1980s, of the bronze statue by Lagoa Henriques, which represents the writer sitting at the table on the café terrace.

With all the importance it has had in the cultural life of the country, it today keeps its identity intact, both for the specificity of its decoration and for the symbol it represents because it is linked to circles of intellectuals.

Authored by architect Manuel Joaquim Norte Júnior, one of the most notable architects of his generation and winner of five Valmor and Municipal Architecture Awards and two honorable mentions, the design of the façade, luxurious and Parisian style, has become a brand image of the Brazilian. Classified, since 1997, as a property of public interest, it is today one of the oldest and one of the only three cafes in Lisbon that crossed throughout the twentieth century and remain open. In 2017, the City Council of Lisbon distinguished the Brazilian with the award “Lojas com História”, awarded according to the cumulative interest of its activity, as well as the existence and preservation of material, cultural and historical heritage elements.

A Brasileira do Chiado is always a truly iconic space of the city of Lisbon, earning its prominent rank among the most emblematic places of Chiado, as one of the most visited and photographed in the whole city.

A Brasileira do Chiado is a brand of the O Valor do Tempo Group, since March 2020.

Our considerations

Our CEO, Mr. Reza Rahim, is a regular patron of A Brasileira do Chiado, whenever he is in Portugal whilst dealing with his clients and make it a point of presenting them to this place so marked by Portuguese history culture and bathed by the Brazilian flavor.

We are grateful for the collaboration of the communication team of Brasileira do Chiado, represented by Ms. Sónia Felgueiras, who very professionally gave us the material and photos to illustrate our humble but pretentious Blog News.
