Óbidos – The nostalgia found in some places in Portugal is somewhat palpable.

This country holds a significant number of the ancient cities of Europe, places that still have a well-preserved past in the Iberian Peninsula. One of them is Óbidos, a small village in the west, approximately 84 km from Lisbon.

Of Roman origin, it is surrounded by a great wall. Easily accessible, Óbidos is a must for anyone who has a few days of vacation and is looking for a place steeped in history.

After experiencing the architectural novelties of cities like Lisbon, Porto, and Faro in Portugal, one wonders where to find more cultural diversity in the Portuguese surroundings. Óbidos answers this question to travelers eager for adventure and discoveries.

With narrow and peculiar streets, with a medieval charm that excites the eye, showy churches and a very strong trade aimed at tourists. Strolling through the streets and hillsides is a pleasure for all. It is possible to find products made in the town, as well delights from neighbouring towns. For those who like souvenirs, these are abundant throughout.

The bars and restaurants form a tasting hall offering Ginja (local drink) typically served in quaint and delicious glasses made of chocolate. Many of these restaurants have preserved the medieval originality of the time, without giving up comfort and a pleasant ambience.

There is an interesting thing that the traveler needs to know. As the streets in this town are very narrow, it is very difficult to travel by car. Even those who own the smallest of cars face difficulty when trying to travel through a city designed to withstand the coming and going of smaller chariots and ox carts. In fact, it is possible and, importantly, permitted to drive through the streets, but if you don’t want to be stopped in the middle of the street by tourists and other vehicles, better to leave your car in a nearby parking lot and walk to the hotel.

The Óbidos inns are wonderful. Old houses transformed into hotels! For those who like this type of accommodation, there is a wide variety, with the advantage of being in the middle of this town that has, in addition to

  • kiddie rides:
  • performance artists;
  • musicians from different musical genres in strategic locations and for those who visit in July, you can enjoy a beautiful medieval festival.

Those looking for something more luxurious can stay in the restored Castle of Óbidos.

Aqueduct of Óbidos city

There is also the Usseira Aqueduct, also known as the Óbidos Aqueduct, located in the parish of Santa Maria, town and municipality of Óbidos.

A wonderful work of Portuguese engineering from 1570. When walking through the old streets of small houses, you can feel the energy from those past times. There is even a beautiful view of the small town from a viewpoint very close to the centre of the town.

couples in love in search of a vibrant and unique place

However, what is most pleasurable in Óbidos, in my opinion, is to take a relaxed stroll throughout the town. Nothing beats this fantastic experience. It is a place that surprises us by its peculiar architectural formation, recommended to all, especially for couples in love in search of a vibrant and unique place.
